For this inaugural week, we propose to the students to curate an event/celebration at the of the week in a cultural venue in Geneva that will represent them as a group and will invite the external public. Space and Communication are made by its students, the interaction between them, and can take a different form and expression each year.

The students will have to define which kind of event they want to organize, and they will be decided into different groups to fill all their needs.

The workshop is planned as an inmersive experience to deeply understand the nature of light and its relation with the space. This is done by doing a hands on project with light. This projectual process will from concept to test and prototype  conceptualising, developing, building and documenting a real size project

SOUND WORKSHOP

with Arno Mathies & Dominic Robson

For this project, we are going to be working with sound in space. We want you to create a sound environment. This environment can be whatever you want it to be, a space, an object, an installation a piece of furniture. The sound can be acoustic or it can be recorded, edited, and montaged together.

You can act as an agent, operator or performer within your own space.

The important outcome of the project is that it explores the relationship of sound in space creating an environment which we can all experience.

The First Encounters workshop aims to expose the participants to various methods, forms of expression, and production techniques associated with alternative speculative fiction, as a means of expanding their imaginative potential and drawing them into a complex and nuanced conversation about colonialism’s defining of the other and the consequential, sustained, assault such a definition has wrought on beings, on bodies, on places, on consciousness and on imagination.

The purpose of this workshop is to guide students into discovering how performance can be used not only as a medium or a tool in their design interventions but also how it could engage and interact with its surrounding and/or public, as a way to approach the world and address political issues.

At this stage in the masters curriculum, the transition between theory and practice is being articulated. Therefore, we have decided to link this workshop allowing the students to extract their critical written thoughts into a performance*. Performance has evolved along the years to taking multiple definitions and aesthetics in different contexts, becoming much more institutionalised. Therefore, along with the students, this workshop aims to open up to these different definitions and guide each student depending on each one's design practices. We ask everyone to bring a performance reference* (name and title+video) of a designer, an artist or a dancer who made a work in which they used their bodies or parts of it. to present and comment.

*It can be through gestures, voice, an image/ video of themselves, or an avatar, etc. It can be live action, a situation, an interaction or a participatory/socially engaged event. It can be live or recorded, spontaneous or scripted, with or without a public. It can be with or without actors. It can be public or private, embodied or delegated, time based or timeless. It can occur during any type of setting (internet, video game, street, museum, theatre ...).

Making of @Joseph Curle

Playing-on both festive and political interpretations of the Speakeasy, an illicit establishment for consumption of spirits during Prohibition in the US, designers students of the MA Space & Com will pay homage to a lineage of designers stressing out the importance of restoring the invisibility ` illicit” women and non-westerners designers that did and do matter.

Speakeasy celebrates the art of crafting a cocktail, and knowledge of mixology. The first-known reference to cocktails was originates either from the 19th century French word “coquetier” – the name of the egg-cup in which drinks were served, or from an editorial in the Farmer’s Cabinet (Amherst, New Hampshire, April 28, 1803) that said : “It talked of a “lounger” who, while nursing an 11 a.m. hangover, “Drank a glass of cocktail – excellent for the head[1]

LA FABRIQUE DU PLURIVERS

with Matali Crasset
